Department of Fashion, Body, and  Garment

Shape + Theory is a semester long course in the Fashion Design Department. Artist Cheryl Pope leads students
in a exploration in the design of ‘experimental’ garments using the basic elements of mass, volume, form and motion.
Each student was partnered with a senior resident for whom he/she was challenged to design and create a wearable
garment or object. Through on-site interviews and conversations, students collected detailed information, stories,
and measurements to inspire one of a kind pieces. We then returned to the retirement home to present
the and discuss the designs, and document the garments on the resident.

To design as a solution, with empathy, as a portrait, with admiration and respect, or a combination of each.

Each SAIC student was partnered with a resident and challenged to design and create a wearable garment or object
for the resident. Through on site interviews and conversations, students collected detailed information, stories,
and measurements to inspire one of a kind pieces for each resident. We then returned to the retirement home to present
the garments to the residents, discuss the design, and select a location to document the garments on the resident.
Students were challenged to consider their approach to the definition of design and client. To design as a solution,
with empathy, as a portrait, with admiration and respect, or a combination of each. Connecting with our elders,
widening our idea of the fashion market, and considering the body, identity, and how it relates to garments
as we age and are seen, understood, and respected in our communities and cities were among the many challenges
and opportunities presented by this project.
